Dr. Danilo Mandic led a research team in 2015-16 to study Syrian refugees on the Balkan Route. Dr. Mandic described how his research helped clarify gaps in sociological literature on refugees. Furthermore, his talk focused on uncritical reliance on legal definitions in conducting social science research on forced migrations. Danilo Mandic is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Harvard University. His book Gangsters and Other Statesmen, on the role of organized crime in separatist movements of the post-Cold War period, is forthcoming at Princeton University Press.
